Can you afford to chip in $5 more per month so that all our neighbors have a safe place to sleep?

The City of Champaign Township is asking Champaign residents to increase the limiting rate by $5 per month per $100,000 of home value to support their vital services for our neighbors in need.

This would be the first time the tax has been raised in decades. The proposed rate is still lower than neighboring townships such as in Urbana, Decatur, and Normal.

The money will go to:

  • $3.4 million to support homeless services and case management including Strides - our largest and only emergency 24 hour shelter for residents experiencing homelessness.

  • $200,000 to stabilize the Rental Assistance Program and increase award amounts from $800 to $1,000. This is a one-time every two years opportunity for help if you fall behind in rent. It prevents homelessness.

  • $70,000 to increase General Assistance for residents waiting for federal disability payments (SSI) from $340 to $425 per month

  • $85,000 for the tax assessor's budget to make sure all Champaign residents are paying a fair amount of property taxes
