We all benefit when we help our neighbors in need.

The services provided by Township prevent unnecessary strain and cost for our hospitals, emergency rooms, police departments and other vital services.

Who is in Strides? Our neighbors – most have grow up in CU and they have fallen on hard times – have medical issues, lost work, or evicted – and trying to get back on their feet. Residents include older adults, people with disabilities, veterans, people who have recently been evicted, those who are employed yet still struggling, people who are underemployed and trying to get back on their feet, and so many more. Most of us are all one major life event away from needing STRIDES

Who is City of Champaign Township? In the state of Illinois, township governments perform three mandatory functions: 1) providing administering a general assistance to very low income residents who are out of work or have disabilities program to qualifying residents; 2) assessing real property values so every resident pays their fair share of taxes; and 3) maintaining township infrastructure. Beyond these three mandated services, township governments may also provide other vital and essential services including but not limited to youth programs, disability assistance, homeless shelter operations, and health services.

In Champaign, the City of Champaign Township administers transitional assistance for those with pending Social Security Disability benefits, provides rental assistance for cost burdened households, assesses the value of taxable property in the township, and operates Strides, a low-barrier homeless shelter in Champaign County.

Township staff include social workers and case managers who work tirelessly with residents and partners to support our neighbors in need and help them find solutions to the problems they face.
