Temporary funding has run out while the need for shelter has grown.
STRIDES IS OUR ONLY LOW BARRIER SHELTER
City of Champaign Township opened Strides in 2023 to fill a gap: we lacked a year-round low-barrier shelter putting homeless residents at great risk.
Strides serves up to 80 homeless residents – with a safe place to sleep along with, laundry, showers, food, and support to move into permanent housing.
Its residents are our neighbors – most grew up here, have fallen on hard times, and are working to get back on their feet.
Over half Strides residents are seniors or people with disabilities.
STRIDES IS AT RISK OF CLOSING
Strides is funded by temporary federal COVID relief funds.
To sustain Strides long-term requires an increase in the tax levy.
Champaign Council voted unanimously to ask the taxpayers for additional support.
Without support, the township will have to end crucial services and limit or close Strides.
STRIDES SAVES LIVES
Our neighbors sleeping outside risk hypothermia, frostbite, and death.
Homeless residents die 30 years earlier than average Americans.
Everyone deserves a safe place to lay their head at night.
